Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Hernias are a common and have been routinely repaired by open surgical techniques. The disadvantage of this is the requirement to dissect through normal tissues including muscles and nerves in order to repair the defect in the abdominal wall. A small, but significant percentage of patient may develop chronic groin pain as a consequence of this surgery.

Laparoscopic hernia repair avoids this problem by repairing the defect from within the abdomen, utilising three small incisions and a mesh for a tension-free repair.

This is now the treatment of choice for double hernias and recurrent hernias, or incisional hernias after previous abdominal surgery. Patient can go home on the same day or following an overnight stay. Return to work and normal activities is usually much faster.
